The Royal Ring: Meghan Markle’s Engagement Ring

The biggest event in the wedding world this month is the nuptials for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. It’s Saturday, May 19th in Windsor (just outside of London) for those still yet to mark the royal occasion on their calendars.

Markle’s engagement ring features three diamonds with a classic yellow-gold plated band. The three stones include a center cushion cut diamond estimated to be 5 carats and two sparking .75 carat brilliant cut stones. There are also replica versions of the ring selling on the streets of London for just 15 pounds.

The two .75 carat diamonds are from Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana’s personal collection, making them difficult to value (so-called experts ballpark the ring’s value at up to $350,000). After Diana’s death in a 1997 auto accident, Princes William and Harry selected mementos from their mother’s possessions. Harry picked her engagement ring, while William selected a yellow gold Cartier Tank Francaise watch.

The two would eventually switch possessions. When Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton in 2010, it was with Diana’s ring. The two would marry the following year.

Markle’s ring (an emerald cut) is closer to an actual Princess cut with its square-like shape than Middleton’s ring. Technically speaking, a Princess cut is the second most popular cut shape for diamonds next to a round brilliant. The face-up shape of the Princess cut is square or rectangular and the profile or side-on shape is similar to that of an inverted pyramid with four beveled sides. An emerald cut is also a step cut, meaning that it is not designed to maximize brilliance unlike the Princess cut, which is a brilliant cut.

Princess Diana’s and Dutchess Kate’s ring consists of 14 solitaire diamonds surrounding a 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire, all set in 18-karat white gold.
