Have you had your eye on cushion cut engagement rings? Maybe you like the look of a cushion cut diamond but want something a bit more unique or modern. If that’s the case, then you should consider an elongated cushion cut engagement ring.

An elongated cushion cut engagement ring can give you the unique look you crave. But at the same time, it can still reflect the romantic feel of its vintage origins.

Do we have your attention? Read on to find out more about this fascinating and beautiful stone.

What Types of Diamonds Are Elongated Cushion Cuts?

Regular cushion cut diamonds evolved from the old mine cut diamond and have a square shape with rounded corners. Elongated cushion cuts are exactly what their name implies–they are rectangular-shaped cushion cuts.

Are Elongated Cushion Cut Diamonds Rare

Yes, elongated cushion diamonds are rare–but mostly because they are not in demand. Due to the lack of demand, not many are cut; this makes them harder to find. And since they are hard to find in general, that means finding high-quality elongated cushion diamonds is even more difficult.

What Makes Cushion Cut Diamonds Hard to Find?

Part of the difficulty in finding well-cut elongated cushions for an engagement ring is that the shape varies widely from diamond to diamond. These variances exist in part because there is no official cut grade for a cushion cut diamond.

Some elongated cushions have nicely rounded corners and sides that curve beautifully. Others have straighter sides and sharper corners (which isn’t ideal). The faceting patterns along with the length to width ratio of different cushion cut stones can also vary greatly. The outcome of this is a stone with an undesirable shape.

Cushion vs Elongated Cushion

The difference between the two is in the length to width ratio. A regular, square cushion cut should have a ratio of about 1-1.05. An elongated cushion cut will have a ratio of 1.15+.

Something else to keep in mind is that an elongated cushion will have more of a “crushed ice” look to it. This gives it a more sparkly appearance closer to a radiant cut.

Does an Elongated Cushion Diamond Look Bigger Than a Round?

An elongated cushion cut diamond can look bigger than a round of the same carat weight. This is possible thanks to the elongated cushion’s larger table. We should also note that, on the other hand, a regular cushion cut diamond could look smaller than a round–even if they’re the same carat size.

Elongated Cushion Cuts vs Emerald Cuts

Elongated cushion and emerald cuts are not the same. The only feature they may have in common is their rectangular shape–but that’s where commonalities end.

Although they both have rectangular shapes, a nicely cut cushion should have rounded corners. An emerald cut diamond has square corners and features a step cut that allows you to see right into the center of the diamond. A cushion cut diamond can have either a brilliant or modified brilliant cut.

Is a Cushion Cut Diamond Expensive?

When compared to a round brilliant, a cushion cut diamond of the same carat weight will be less expensive. However, a square cushion cut diamond and an elongated cushion cut with similar color and clarity will be about the same price.

Choose a Lab Grown Diamond For Your Engagement Ring

If you’re looking for a great value, then you should consider lab grown diamonds. Lab grown diamonds are 20-50% less expensive than natural diamonds and are chemically, physically, and optically the same.

With lab grown diamonds you get more for your money. Have your eye on a larger carat size diamond? With the money you save on a lab created stone you can upgrade to a larger carat size without breaking the bank.

What Settings Do Elongated Cushion Diamonds Look Best In?

An elongated cushion will look beautiful in just about any type of setting. However, if you purchase a diamond with a lower color grade, you can make it look whiter with a platinum or white gold setting.

If you prefer a vintage feel for your cushion cut engagement ring, yellow gold can give it a warmer, soft look.

Want to give it a more subtle modern spin? Then choose a setting that features a hidden halo (like our Secret Sapphire Ring) of small stones. A hidden halo is set just below your ring’s center stone and adds a whisper of sparkle.
