At Clean Origin, every engagement ring is made to order. From the color of your metal to the center stone, and setting, you’ll be able to customize every aspect of this important piece of jewelry. But where do you start? Let’s walk through the steps to design your own engagement ring and browse the various options from which you’ll be able to choose.

Do you have a budget for your ring?

First things first, you’ll want to set a budget. This will give you a good idea of what options you have in regards to both the setting and the diamond when designing your own engagement ring. However, don’t forget that lab grown diamonds can be anywhere from 20-40% less expensive than mined stones. So, if you’ve set your budget based on mined prices, you’ll be able to get a better or bigger lab-grown diamond for the same price.

Does it cost more to customize your ring?

To answer your next question: no, it does not cost more to design your own engagement ring from Clean Origin, since all of our engagement rings are made once you’ve selected your specifications. In fact, our diamonds are extremely competitively priced, even for lab-grown stones. Make sure you do your research, shop around, and find the best diamond at the best price.

What do you need to know about diamonds?

Let’s review the things you’ll want to know about diamonds before you design your own engagement ring. In general, you’ll want to know which of the four C’s is the most important, if not all, to you or your partner’s ring. If you’re looking for a lot of sparkle, you’ll want to make sure you get a well-cut stone. If the size is what matters most, you’ll want to focus on the carat weight. Take a refresher in each of the 4 c’s and then convey your thoughts to one of our diamond experts. Since our customer service team is made up of individuals with diamond experience (not just salespeople), they’ll be able to help you decide what to focus on and areas in which you might be able to hold back.

Do you start with a setting or a diamond?

Although there are instances where you could start with either, this will really vary from person to person, and ring to ring. Let’s say you really want a fancy shaped diamond, such as an emerald. Not all settings will be able to accommodate this shape, and you’ll likely need to narrow down your options after finding the perfect diamond. However, if you’re choosing a more universal shape, such as a brilliant round stone, your options increase greatly. In this case, you can choose almost any setting and will have many different styles to choose from.

If you’ve always had your eye on a certain type of setting — such as vintage, or halo — then choosing the best diamond will depend on the shapes the ring can hold. Thankfully there are rings such as the Epaulette that can hold any of our diamond shapes! If you really love a setting but it doesn’t hold your favorite diamond shape, talk with one of our diamond experts. They will be able to help you find a similar setting or diamond to create the engagement ring of your dreams.

When designing your own wedding ring, our online ring builder gives you the option to either choose a diamond or a setting, making it easy to proceed with either route.

What metal color is best?

The metal color really comes as a personal preference. White gold is a best-seller given its recent popularity and versatility. However, yellow gold has always been a classic look and often matches other standard gold-colored jewelry. Rose gold has grown in popularity over the last few years and is definitely a stand-out look that makes an engagement ring quite unique. All Clean Origin rings are available in white, yellow, and rose gold.

You’ll also have the option to choose 14k or 18 kt gold. Since 18kt contains more gold than 14, it will be a heavier ring and cost a bit more. However, a 14kt ring will be a bit stronger. This is due to the fact that gold is actually a fairly soft metal, and the more it’s combined with other metals, the stronger it will become. If you work a lot with your hands or participate in extracurriculars that require a lot of use of your hands, then it might be wise to go with the 14kt gold.

Finally, you have the option to choose platinum. Obviously, this would mean you’ve picked white metal as your ring color. So why choose platinum over white gold? Even more so than 14kt gold, platinum is an extremely strong metal. This is the perfect option for anyone who has worries about the durability of their ring. However, just like 18kt gold, platinum may be stronger but is also more expensive. This is due to the extra labor that must go into working with such a resilient metal. Oftentimes, individuals will need to go with a platinum ring due to allergies to nickel — one of the alloys included in a white gold finish.
