About Each Company

Clean Origin. Founded by Alexander Weindling, third-generation diamantaire and former global managing director for Georg Jensen; Ryan Bonifacino, former chief marketing officer and digital VP of Alex and Ani; and Terry Burman, who served as CEO for Signet Jewelers, Sterling Jewelers, and chairman Zale Corporation. This group of diamond and jewelry veterans know a thing or two about the industry and saw a new-age of diamonds in lab-grown. In fact, at Clean Origin, you won’t find any mined diamonds in any product. From the large center stones to the accent diamonds lining the band of a pave ring, each stone is 100% man-made. Clean Origin is also 100% online and is able to offer extremely competitive pricing because of this reason.

Brilliant Earth. Founded by Beth Gerstein and Eric Grossberg who met at Stanford University. Gerstein received her MBA before working at a management consulting firm. She was searching for her own engagement ring when she decided she’d enter the diamond and jewelry industry. Grossberg worked in the venture capital world before partnering with Gerstein to open Brilliant Earth. Neither parties have a background in the diamond or jewelry industries. The company sells lab-grown diamonds, but they also offer mined stones. Brilliant Earth offers showrooms in various large cities across the United States. However, an appointment is required to browse the products.

Pricing: How Do We Compare?

COMPARATIVE PRICING FOR A 1.54 CT ROUND STONE IN F COLOR AND VS2 CLARITY AND MINIMUM VERY GOOD CUT GRADE

1.54 ct size includes stones ranging from 1.52ct to 1.56ct

COMPARATIVE PRICING FOR A 2.00 CT ROUND STONE IN G COLOR AND SI1 CLARITY AND MINIMUM VERY GOOD CUT GRADE

2.00 ct size includes stones ranging from 1.98ct to 2.02ct

100% Man-Made

Although Brilliant Earth offers lab-grown diamonds, if you purchase a ring with any sort of accent diamonds (pictured), the smaller diamonds in your ring will be mined. They do provide an option to “upgrade” those smaller diamonds to lab-grown, but you’re charged an additional fee to do so and then your ring cannot be eligible for a return.

At Clean Origin, every single diamond we sell is 100% lab-grown. We believe man-made diamonds are the future and have no desire to offer mined stones. We are 100% confident that all of our diamonds are 100% ethically sourced, as lab-grown diamonds are the only way to ensure this.

Customer Service

At Clean Origin, we pride ourselves on our white-glove customer service team. Our team averages 4+ years in the diamond industry and they’re there to help find the best ring for our customers, not for their commission checks. We offer phone, email and chat support to answer any and all questions you might have. We keep an open line of communication from the time you reach out, forward. We do not lose interest simply because you’ve already made a purchase. Our customers are our main priority and that care continues through the lifetime of your Clean Origin product.

What It Means to Be 100% Ethically Sourced

A lot of companies, including Brilliant Earth, claim that their mined diamonds are “ethically sourced”. Although this looks great on paper, there’s only one way to know for sure that your ring is 100% ethical: by buying a lab-grown diamond. And, since Brilliant Earth uses mined stones as the accent diamonds on their pave rings, even their lab-grown rings could be tainted with the negative practices that so many of you are trying to avoid.

Unfortunately, no matter how many times people use the term “ethically sourced”, it only holds true if the diamond can be 100% traced back to its origin. Which, often times it cannot.
