Step-by-step Guide on How to Design Your Own Pair of Diamond Studs

Building your own diamond stud earrings has never been this easy. Our stud earrings builder allows you to choose from a vast range of options to design a one-of-a-kind pair of diamond earrings.

Stone shape

Not to be confused with a diamond's cut, the shape of a diamond is the defining feature of any pair of diamond earrings. For that reason, take your time to consider your personal preferences and the style of earrings you are looking for. At this moment, only round diamonds are compatible with build your own diamond stud earrings.

Setting

Setting refers to how a diamond is fixed into the earrings. The most popular settings for diamond earrings are prongs and bezels. These minimalist designs do not detract the spotlight from the center diamond.

Metal Type

Although the metal color is more of an accent in studs, it can change the look of the earring completely. The two most common metal colors are white gold and yellow gold. No one wants that awful green hue that appears on the skin after wearing fake metal or silver fashion studs. Ensure your studs are either 14k or 18k gold. Platinum and rose gold are also excellent metal options.

Post Type

Posts are the backings of earrings, and they come in a couple of different types for diamond studs. The three available post options for diamond stud earrings are "friction", "threaded", and "La Pousette" posts. The most common is the "friction" post type, which has a push-on and pull-off design. This is the standard backing that you will see on most earrings. The "threaded" post type allows you to screw the backing on and off, offering more protection. Lastly, the La Pousette earring back features a flat disc placed at the back of the earlobe and a hinged clip that holds the earring post in place, ensuring secure positioning and stability to prevent the earring from sliding or falling off.

What Are The Best Diamond Shapes for Stud Earrings?
A good practice for choosing a diamond shape for diamond earrings is to consider the general face shape of the person who will wear them. You can add an elongated look to your own diamond earrings with oval and emerald-cut diamonds for wider faces. For longer faces, symmetrical diamond shapes such as round, princess, or Asscher can add glamor to your style.
Which Setting is Ideal for Diamond Stud Earrings?

The most popular settings for diamond earrings are prongs and bezels. These minimalist designs do not detract the spotlight from the center diamond.

The prong setting is the most common in studs. At Clean Origin, we offer three and four-prong settings. The four-prong is the classic stud style, while the three-prong gives the diamond a somewhat triangular appearance.

We also offer the bezel setting for a very polished, round look. A bezel setting encapsulates the entire back of the diamond and displays a metal perimeter around the studs.

At Clean Origin, our diamond earring settings are available in rose gold, yellow gold, white gold, and platinum.

What Is a Good Size for Diamond Stud Earrings?

There is yet to be a consensus on the exact size you should get for diamond studs. However, most diamond earrings have stones that are 1/2 – 1 carat.

Unlike engagement rings, diamond studs generally do not have an elaborate setting or outer accent diamonds that make the center diamond look larger than its carat weight indicates. With diamond studs, what you see is what you get.

How To Choose a Clarity Grade for Your Own Diamond Earrings
When choosing the best clarity for diamond stud earrings, you should keep the diamond shape in mind. In general, inclusions are less visible in diamond shapes like marquise, round, pear, oval, cushion, and princess cut. With these cuts, you can get away with an SI clarity grade. However, inclusions are more visible to the naked eye for shapes like the emerald, Asscher cut (or any step-cut diamond). If you choose a step-cut shape for diamond stud earrings, go for a VS clarity.
How Long Does It Take to Receive Custom Orders?
Domestic orders generally take 3-4 weeks to ship or be available for in-store pickup. Due to the nature of international orders, those will take longer to arrive than domestic orders.
